That's a tough one. The Smilodon most likely lived in social groups like the lion. I would imagine that the males were just as aggressive and territorial as the lions. Further more, we don't know if they had manes. It is entirly possible that the male Smilodons played the same role in the pride as male Lions. Therefore I can see them having a mane.
The smilodon was built heavier in the front than any of the modern cats. That's a traiter of a fighter. Male lions are heavy in the front as well, but not to that extent. It would be a close call.

See, we don't know anything about Smilodon behavior. There are evidence of them living in groups. But the bones don't tell us how aggresive they were, or how they looked. Did they have manes? Stripes? Spots? We don't know.
But I will tell you that those 2 giant teeth would be useless in a fight.

Well, ur right we dont know anything about the smilodon. The reason I chose the african lion was cuz they are bigger, heavier, probably more powerful. I just cant picture a lion losing to a cat smaller than itself. The male lion can defeat the biggest and strongest cat ever...the 600 lb tiger, smilodon are the size of a jaguar and they weigh 400 lbs (heavy for its size). So the male lion has a HUGE advantage mainly cuz they are significally larger and thats easy for the LION to defeat a cat smaller itself.

Ummm... Smilodon populator was not smaller than the lion, if anything bigger. You're thinking of Smilodon fatalis, the North American Smilodon. That one was smaller. But the Populator was in a 600 lb mark, and build much heavier in the fron than the lion.
As far as the two sabres go. The only time they can safely use them without breaking them is once the victim is totaly subdued.

Think about what you just said. If populator was in a 600 lb mark, how does that make him smaller than a lion when the lion AVERAGES at 420 lb?
Where do you get your info from? Hell, even the largest lions rarely exceed 500 lb.

It's hard to know what they actually averaged. The skeletons found were usually the same size as the lions, and in some case slightly larger. The estimated weight range is 400 to 600 lb.
