I've noticed you were a bit misinformed about the size of some Smilodon cats, so let me tell you about them.
There were 3 cats in the Smilodon family:
Smilodon gracialis - the earliest and the smallest, lived in North America.
Smilodon populator - largest and lived in South America.
Smilodon fatalis - the most famous of the three and lived in North America (La Brea Tar Pits as evidence).
In size, fatalis was considerably smaller than populator. Scaling of the skeletons showed it to be about as large as a lioness, though more bulky.
Smilodn populator was the size of a large lion. The estimated weight for the larger speciments was ranged between 500 and 600 lb. On average, they seemed to be bulkier than the modern male lions.
All info is from "Big Cats and their Fossil relatives".
Hope it helps.
