Again, depends on the size of the Brown Bear. But I would give it an edge given it's size and build.

Yeah, but this is a one on one. That's a different game. A pride of lions would rip a bear appart too.

I know there are some big black bears out there but i think they are few and far between. All the black bears i have seen on tv and at the zoo have been quite small. They really don't look any larger than a well fed mastiff.

It depends on the species and size of the bear. A male Kodiak Brown Bear can reach up to 1700 lb. A male Grizzly is between 300 to 850 lb, with some going up to 1000 lb. An average male lion is 420 lb. A Grizzly is commonly in an upper 600 lb range. I think the bear would win. It's built to tough for the lion. Male kodiaks are too big for any male lion to take not even worth discussing. A male grizzly across north america is apparently 440lbs according to the one of the most credible members on bears. And the average male lion weighs in at about 425lbs from Rhodesia. The lion would win it's weapons are better adapted for the kill it's claws are better designed for holding on too prey keeping it still due to being hook shaped and retractable. It's canines means it can kill quicker as well which makes forth for a better killing bite. The lion's greater agility also would mean it should be able to out maneuver the bear to pin it down and deliver the bite. Even if the bear does pin the lion down that doesn't mean it will win the lion's highly flexible spine would enable it too turn quickly and bite the bear. I remember seeing from a clip on youtube of a tiger exhibiting the same technique when another tiger ambushed it. Really the bear is out gunned in terms of weapons and maneuverability. Also a tiger named Dale was known to take on bears his weight (according to Maurice Hornocker renowned biologist from a email a credible member named Kifaru got) and only one of those bears put up a struggle. Considering Dale weighed 215kgs that means he did in fact take males. "# Siberia males 140 - 320 kg." From clik here. Dale made a habit of taking bears in fact they were his favorite food the fact that only of those bears put a struggle shows how outgunned bears are against similar sized felines. Lion has my vote at similar weights or parity. A bear would need a at least 100lb weight advantage to gain victory.

It depends on the bear. If we're talking about an 800-1000 lbs Kodiak bear, no lion would have a chance. It's silly to think that.

It's too small to read.
And I'm talking about real bears. 800 lbs + No lion would stand a chance against 1000 lb Kodiak or Polar bear, not a chance.

A black bear wouldn't fair well when pitted against any big cat. And if you add a lion into the equation, it just becomes rediculously one sided. The psychological part comes in to play; The black bear is a are very shy animal's and usualy stay away from humans, they should most probably retreat when confronted by a male lion who, with the key advantadge of confidence and aggresion would likey start the conflict. The lion's mane gives it a very intimidating appearnce which has an immediate psychological dissadvantadge to any animal fighting a lion. Phillyleo, no disrespect, but you reasoning is flawed; Your terribly mistaken on the nature of fighting methods and tactics used by black bear's. They do not 'stand' on two feet and strike with their paw's like grizzlies. But rather try to wrestle their opponent to the ground. That is their fighting style. An african lion is stronger than an average sized black bear and has an 50-90 pound weight advantadge, along with all the other key attributes needed to defeat any black bear. Agility, speed, biteforce, confidence all account heavily on the black bear.

There is no such animal as a brown bear; we'll need to deicde if it's a grizzly or a kodiak we want to compare with an African lion. Grizzly bears, with a diet of berries, vegetation, and small mammals, are smaller than Kodiak bears Your average grizzly brown bear weighs 550 lbs, a fairly large 800lbs or 1000lbs will not be an average for grizzly or kodiak's. I belive a grizzly bear would be a perfect match for a lion

a fight between a lion and a grizzly would likely end in a victory for the bear, though the lion would put up a valiant struggle. likewise, grizzlies are no larger; lion`s have a muscle mass of about 60%. i doubt that of a grizzly is any different, at equal mass. however, the grizzly is far more durable, thanks to more compact form, and is therefore able to sustain certain injuries that would be fatal to a lion. likewise, they would last far longer in a battle, though, if the lion is able to secure an early lead, he may ensure his victory.
